Striped hyena in Swahili: fisi miraba (Hyaena hyaena)

Shoulder height: 65 – 75 cm; weight: 45 – 50 kg. A predominantly North African species, the striped hyena is pale brown with several dark vertical streaks andn striking off-black mane. It occurs alongside the spotted hyena in dry parts of Tanzania, but is far scarcer and more secretive.

Shoulder height: 40 – 50 cm; white: 10 – 15 kg. This very sensitive insectivore looks like a smaller striped hyena, being not much bigger a jackal. It occurs in low numbers in drier parts of Tanzania.
