Steenbok in Swahili: tondoro (Raphicerus campestris)

Shoulder height: 50 cm; weight: 11 kg. This rather nondescript small antelope had red-brown upper parts and clear white underparts, and the male has short straight horns. It is probably the most commmonly observed small antelope in Africa, through it has a broken range, and is absent from southern Tanzania despite being common in the north of the country and in southern Africa. Like most other antelopes of its size, the steenbok is normally encountered singly or in pairs and tends to (freeze) when disturbed.
