African wild cat in Swahili: chapaku (Felis sylvestris)
Shoulder height: 35 cm; weight: 2.5–4.5 kg. Ranging from the Mediterranean to the Cape of Good Hope, the African wild cat is similar in appearance to – and probably ancestral to – its domestic namesake. Like the caracal, it is common, but nocturnal, and infrequently seen. Though not threatened as such, the African wild cat regularly breeds with feral domestic cats and there concerns its genetic pool is becoming increasingly diluted where the two regularly interact.
